In the spring of 2008, 52 Media Inc was busy finishing their feature documentary film Air India 182 and was in the process of shooting the first season of a 13 part television series called STUCK. There were many tapes and hard drives flying to and from edit stations, effects houses, sound mixers and colour correctors. David contacted Visual Inclination in April of 2008 to help coordinate their post-production workflow and also to apply our signature graphical touch to their projects.
As a young company, 52 Media Inc didn’t yet have an established identity or comprehensive manual for other branded materials. We channeled the talents of our design director Scott Wise to generate a full identity rollout and web presence for them.
After successfully supervising the sound mix, colour correction and delivery of STUCK’s first season, we created the commercial DVD for Air India 182. Visual Inclination edited and colour corrected more than 50 minutes of additional footage and special features, then crafted the menu interface in a clean, elegant style that matched the film’s sober and respectful tone.
To promote the CBC, Newsworld and festival screenings and generate DVD sales, we were commissioned to design and build a website for the project. Again, we tied directly into the film’s aesthetic and launched with an elegant solution for watching 21 new web clips, secure press downloads section and an online store.
While the first season of STUCK was enjoying popular and critical success, our next goal was to dramatically streamline 52 Media’s editing system for season two. The previous system had relied heavily on multiple external FireWire drives chained together, which caused instability and slow transfers between stations.
To solve this, we built a high-speed editing network around Apple’s Final Cut Server. Visual Inclination budgeted, purchased and installed a 10 computer media-sharing network with more than 30 terabytes of storage. Given that Final Cut Server is a new software release, we worked closely with 52 Media and Apple to ensure software glitches were resolved quickly.
Once the editing network was implemented, we were given the task of online editing each episode of STUCK season 2. This involved updating and redesigning the graphics package, colour correcting the show and ensuring efficient output and timely delivery of master tapes.
The team at 52 Media Inc is very creative and talented - working with them has been a joy for us every step of the way, and we look forward to seeing what new and exciting shows they will produce next. We look forward to collaborating with them on future creative projects.
