Freak Encounters is a half-hour thriller prank show with a comedic edge. In each episode, an unwitting victim thinks that they have been hired as a temp, but the situation quickly deteriorates and they are forced to come face-to-face with a terrifying mythical creature. The series’ producers, Suddenly Seemore Productions, approached Visual Inclination to provide on-site editing services for the show, where we ingested and organized footage from 20 different cameras. Much of the media was captured on-site, allowing a far faster turnaround than would otherwise be possible - allowing the Assistant Editor the ability to begin working with the footage as soon as the following morning.
Freak Encounters had a secondary goal of demonstrating visually the mystical creatures that are its subject matter in an interesting way; both as backplate imagery that could be used behind interview footage, and rendered visualizations of the creatures within context. Pulling inspiration from a the concept of a “field guide” to mythical creatures, we explored the idea of many different interpretations of the creature’s legends, which allowed multiple illustrators to work in a wide array of styles and perspectives. From initial creature concept sketches through to final rendered visualizations and backplate composites, Visual Inclination worked closely with the series’ producers to achieve a diverse and evocative suite of visuals to use throughout the show’s segments.
